ISHMII / IIFC Task Force on Heritage Structures

Background

Experience has shown that retrofit work within the context of rehabilitating heritage structures is a very complex challenge. These structures are often constructed from materials that are no longer used in the construction industy and "traditional" assemblies lack test data to support detailed analytical calculations. This situation has often led designers to the use of different approaches to deal with similar problems in the rehabilitation of similar buildings, churches, temples, mosques, memorials and monuments.

 

 

Scope and Objectives of the Task Force

The ISHMII/IIFC Task Force is being established to study the effect of various natural hazards and global climate change on heritage structures and how these structures can be better preserved using FRP strengthening techniques and monitoring techniques. The objectives of the work of the Task Force are to provide an understanding of the following:

  • Global climate change and its impact on heritage structures
  • Seismic, wind and erosion resistance of heritage structures
  • Use of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) materials to strengthen heritage masonry structures
  • Use of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) materials to strengthen heritage wood structures
  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems for heritage masonry and wood structures
  • Long-term performance of FRP, epoxy and lime mortar systems
