Only 30 minutes from the heart of downtown Vancouver, the University of British Columbia holds an international reputation for excellence in advanced research and learning. Civil Engineering has traditionally used imagination, judgment, reasoning and experience to apply science, technology, mathematics and practical experience to develop that which was once only a concept. UBC Civil Engineering ties these foundations to a diverse program – one that uses knowledge from a variety of engineering disciplines to work on the complex technical challenges faced by society in the 21st century.

The ISIS Canada Research Network (Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures) was established in 1995 to provide civil engineers with smarter ways to build, repair and monitor structures using high-strength, non-corroding, fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs) and fibre optic sensors (FOSs). It was created by the federal Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) program and encompasses 14 universities, 30 Project Leaders (principal researchers), 275 researchers, 190 associated organizations, and 45 multidisciplinary demonstration projects. The Administration Centre headquarters for ISIS Canada is at the University of Manitoba.

On April 1, 2009, the ISIS Canada Network Association was established. The aim of the Association is to maintain a strong Canadian focus on development and implementation of leading edge technology in civil infrastructure. This continuing network will utilize the researchers, industry partners, government partners and students of the original ISIS Canada Research Network to continue to advance the use of ISIS technologies through technology transfer actvities in the civil engineering domain. It will identify opportunities for further advancement of the engineering profession, both in research and field demonstration projects. Finally, it will serve as an advisory source to support the success of the ISIS Resource Centre and the on-going updates to relevant manuals and codes.

International Institute for FRP in
Construction
|
There have been rapid growths in the application of advanced fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in construction around the world in terms of both research activities and practical implementations since the late 1990s. Indeed, many have hailed FRP composites as a new generation of construction materials following steel and concrete. Against this background, the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC) was established in March 2003. The aim of the Institute is to advance the understanding and the application of FRP composites in the civil infrastructure, in the service of the engineering profession and society.
