ISIS Canada has announced the release of its Design Manual No. 6, "Civionics Specifications". ISIS intends to introduce significant innovations in the design and construction of civil engineering structures. It is imperative that the innovative structures be monitored for their health, in order for changes in design and construction to be accepted. As a step towards achieving this goal, ISIS Canada is developing a new discipline, which integrates Civil Engineering and Electrophotonics under the combined banner of Civionics (Mufti, 2003). The new discipline of Civionics must be developed by Structural Engineers and Electrophotonics Engineers in order to lend validity and integrity to the process. Civionics will provide engineers with the knowledge to build “smart” structures that incorporate the necessary structural health monitoring (SHM) equipment to supply much needed information related to the health of structures before catastrophic failures. This discipline will, thereby, assist engineers and others to realize the full benefits of monitoring civil engineering structures.
