Professor Jan-Ming Ko is the Vice President (Research Development), the Chair Professor of Structural Engineering, and Director of PolyU Technology & Consultancy Company Ltd., SMILE Technologies Ltd. and PolyU Research Ltd. of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He also serves as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Vantage International (Holdings) Ltd.

Professor Ko holds a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering and a Doctorate Degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Hong Kong. He is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers of United Kingdom and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

He is the Chairman of the Accreditation Board of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (2001/2006), and its representative on the Engineering Education and Training Committee of the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. He is a Governing Council Member of Construction Industry Institute (Hong Kong) and a Council Member of The Hong Kong Institution of Science. He was the President of The Hong Kong Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (1999/2000) and the President of The Hong Kong Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (2000/2001). Professor Ko was also a Panel Member of the Appeal Tribunal in Buildings of the HKSAR (1997-2004) and the Advisor of the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre (since 2002) and the Association of Engineering Professionals in Society.

Professor Ko is a Guest Professor of the Southeast University, Beijing Polytechnic University, Zhejiang University, Xian Jiaotong University, Central South University and Hohai University, PRC, an Advisory Professor of Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics, PRC, and the Scientific Committee Co-Chair of the Joint Research Laboratory on Earth Observations, PRC. He is a Member of the Civil Engineering Advisory Committees of The University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Professor Ko is the Editor-in-Chief of an International Journal – Advances in Structural Engineering (1997-2003), Editor-in-Chief (Asia-Pacific), International Journal – Smart Structures and Systems, the Senior Consultant of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Spatial Structures, a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Engineering Mechanics, South China Journal of Seismology, Journal of Earthquake and Engineering Vibration and Journal of Hazards Prevention and Mitigation Engineering. He is the President of Asian-Pacific Network of Centres for Earthquake Engineering (2005-2007), a Vice President of the International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructures and a Management Board Member of Asian-Pacific Network of Centres for Research in Smart Structures Technology. He was the Vice President of the Board of Directors of Structural Engineers World Congress 2002, the Chairman of the International Conference on Advances in Building Technology (2002), the Co-Chair of the International Conference on Advances and New Challenges in Earthquake Engineering Research (2002), and the Annual International Symposium on Smart Structures and Materials (2003 to 2005).

Professor Ko's research interests are Structural Dynamics, Vibration Monitoring & Control, System Identification, and Damage Detection.
