Aftab Mufti Medal Inaugurated: Urs Meier and Jan-Ming Ko Honored

Dr. Aftab Mufti, first president of ISHMII, was honored at SHMII-5 as ISHMII inaugurated the Aftab Mufti Medal for high achievement and innovation in civil structural health monitoring. Dr. Mufti is held in high esteem for his lifetime of influential engineering accomplishments and dedication to the development of structural health monitoring as a recognized field within civil engineering.

His international leadership and vision has shaped the field globally. With colleagues in the Americas, Europe and Asia, Dr. Mufti co-founded ISHMII and became its first president. The initial recipients of the Aftab Mufti Medal are ISHMII co-founders Dr. Urs Meier, past-Deputy Director General of EMPA, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research, and Dr. Jan-Ming Ko, an Emeritus Professor of Structural Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Pradipta Banerji Ph.D. Appointed President of IIT Roorkee

Dr. Pradipta Banerji, Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, will assume responsibilities as the President of the Indian Institute of Technology at Roorkee in India in mid-October 2011 for an initial term of 5 years. This is the oldest technological university in India, with its inception in 1847 as Thomson College of Engineering and then as University of Roorkee. It became formally an IIT in 2000 by an Act of Parliament.

Dr. Banerji has been a Council member of the International Society for Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure, since the inception of ISHMII in 2004.

ASCE Journal Honors Urs Meier

ISHMII Leader Urs Meier Honored by ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC) have published a joint occasional special issue of the Journal of Composites for Construction in honor of Professor Urs Meier. Edited by Lawrence C. Bank and Kenneth W. Neale, this issue recognizes Professor Meier’s pioneering contributions to the field of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) in construction. Eleven authors from Canada, Greece, Japan, Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the USA contributed papers that represent the strong connection between themselves and Professor Meier or topics that relate to his long history of research and influence in the field of FFP.

Professor Meier has an illustrious career in the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (Empa). Empa is a founding organization of ISHMII and Professor Meier serves on the ISHMII Council and Executive Committee as well as in many noted international organizations.

The leaders and members of ISHMII are pleased to recognize and celebrate our colleague Urs Meier for his life-ling achievements and extend our congratulations. We also note that this is only the second time that this prominent journal has so honored a person with a special issue.
